Deep dive into Investment Banker
Investment Banking is not one job it is a family of very different jobs that all live under the same 'IB' label. Someone in M&A advisory, someone in ECM (IPOs & QIPs), and someone in Leveraged Finance do totally different work day-to-day, even at the same firm. Before you chase 'IB', pick the sub-sector that matches your interest and the entry path that matches your current experience.
Your journey
Follow the arrows. Every step is small and doable. You don't need to be from IIM or IIT you need proof you can do the work.
Week 1–2
Learn what IB, PE, ER, FP&A and Risk actually do. Watch 3–4 explainer videos.
Week 3
Use the role cards below. Choose based on skills you enjoy, not just salary.
Month 2–4
Excel + PowerPoint + accounting + a 3-statement model. This alone beats 80% of freshers.
Month 3–6
NISM XV / CFA Level 1 / a paid financial modelling course. Something the recruiter can verify.
Month 5–7
A DCF on a listed company, an M&A pitch, or an equity report. Post it on LinkedIn.
Month 7–9
Target 30–50 firms. Message alumni. Practice guesstimates and behavioural questions.
Month 9+
Interviews focus on: Why finance? Walk me through a DCF. Tell me about a deal.
Start here
Forget the jargon for a minute. Here's the simplest way to picture what investment banking actually is.
Big companies, governments and investors not individuals. They need help raising money or buying/selling businesses.
Acts as the middle-person. It advises, values the deal, prepares documents and finds buyers or investors.
A fee (usually a % of the deal size) when the deal closes that's why deals and hours are intense.
As a fresher you support the deal team building Excel models, PowerPoint pitchbooks, and research on companies.
One-line example
Tata wants to buy a company in the UK. Tata hires a bank (say JPMorgan). JPMorgan values that UK company, negotiates the price, arranges the money, and gets paid a fee when the deal closes. The analyst on the team builds the model and the pitchbook that makes all this happen.
Pick your role
Same roles as the detailed matrix below, but written the way a friend would explain over coffee. Use these cards to shortlist 1–2 roles you actually want to chase.

Good fit if
You want corporate hours, stability and to learn how a business really runs.
Skip if
You want deal glamour or PE exits.
8–9 hrs
In plain English: You decide if a loan is safe to give. You look at the borrower's financials and score the risk.

Good fit if
You like being careful, structured and analytical.
Skip if
You want fast-paced deal work.
9–10 hrs

Internship opportunity
Students who complete this course and build a clean valuation model can use it as proof of work in internship applications. A strong model is often more impressive to a recruiter than just listing coursework.
