Common questions

Which tax system should I choose?

Whichever costs you less. The new system has lower rates but almost no deductions. The old system allows rent, 80C, insurance and home loan interest but taxes at higher rates. The calculator shows both side by side.

Is Rs 12 lakh really tax free?

In the new system, if the income counted for tax is Rs 12,00,000 or less, the rebate under Section 87A removes the tax completely. For a salaried person the Rs 75,000 standard deduction means a package up to about Rs 12.75 lakh can end at zero tax.

I run a business, what can I claim?

Every genuine expense of earning the income, such as rent, staff, internet, travel and depreciation on equipment. Professionals with receipts up to Rs 75 lakh can also use Section 44ADA and declare only 50% as profit, and small businesses up to Rs 3 crore can use Section 44AD at 6% of digital receipts.
