What you'll be able to do

  • Define assets, liabilities and net worth
  • Read a simple money vocabulary
  • Calculate your own net worth

Think about it

Is your bike an asset or a liability? The honest answer surprises most people.

Story

Let's picture it

Arjun bought a bike on EMI for college. He calls it an asset. Technically the bike is an asset (something he owns with value) and the remaining loan is a liability (something he owes). His net worth is the bike's current value minus the loan left. Because bikes lose value and loans don't, his net worth from this purchase falls every month. Same object, two labels, one honest number.

The net worth equation

Assets

Cash, deposits, investments, gold, property

− Liabilities

Loans, credit card dues, EMIs left

= Net worth

Your real financial position today

Plain English

The simple explanation

Asset: anything you own that has value. Liability: anything you owe. Net worth: assets minus liabilities.

Income is what comes in; expense is what goes out; the gap is your savings rate, the single most powerful number in personal finance.

Return is what an investment earns. Risk is the chance the return is different from what you expected, including much worse.

Real world

Reliance Industries

Open any annual report and you'll see the same three words you just learned, assets, liabilities and equity, just with more zeros. The vocabulary of a ₹20 lakh crore company is identical to yours.

Watch out

Common mistakes

  • Counting a loan-funded item as pure asset
  • Confusing income with wealth
  • Using 'return' without asking 'over what period?'

Did you know?

Warren Buffett's letters are written at roughly an eighth-grade reading level. Complexity is a choice, not a requirement.

Your turn

Mini challenge

Compute your net worth today on paper. Even if it's negative, that's your honest starting line.
