What you'll be able to do

  • Describe the industry a company operates in
  • Tell cyclical industries apart from defensive ones
  • Spot whether an industry is growing, flat or shrinking
  • Use the five forces idea without the jargon

Think about it

Two equally smart founders. One opens a cement plant in a slowdown, the other a diagnostics chain. Who has the easier decade?

Story

Let's picture it

During the 2020 lockdown, two Indian businesses faced the same country. Cinemas sold almost nothing for months. Packaged food companies could barely keep shelves full. Neither outcome had much to do with management skill, the industry decided the weather, and the company only decided how well it sailed.

Visual

Industry personalities

Cyclical

Rises and falls with the economy, cement, steel, autos, real estate.

Defensive

Demand holds in bad times, FMCG, pharma, utilities.

Growth

Structural expansion, digital payments, renewables, data centres.

Declining

Shrinking demand, landline telephony, physical film.

Plain English

The simple explanation

Industry analysis asks: is the pond growing or drying up? A company can only swim as well as the water allows.

Start with three facts, the industry's size, its growth rate, and how many players share it. Then ask who has power: customers, suppliers, or the companies themselves.

Regulation matters enormously in India. Banking, insurance, telecom, pharma and power are shaped as much by RBI, IRDAI, TRAI, CDSCO and state policy as by consumer demand.

Real world

Indian telecom

India once had more than ten mobile operators. After a brutal price war the market consolidated to a handful of large players. Companies that survived saw pricing power return, the industry structure changed the outcome more than any single company's strategy.

Watch out

Common mistakes

  • Projecting a cyclical industry's best year forward forever.
  • Ignoring how many competitors are entering the industry.
  • Forgetting that the regulator can rewrite the economics overnight.

Did you know?

India's organised retail penetration is still far below developed markets, which is why so many companies describe themselves as operating in an 'under-penetrated' market.

Your turn

Mini challenge

Name three cyclical and three defensive industries. For each, write one sentence on what drives demand.

Summary

Study the industry before the company: its size, growth, structure, competitive intensity and regulator. The pond decides how far any fish can swim.

  • Industry direction caps company performance
  • Know whether the industry is cyclical or defensive
  • Entry barriers and rivalry shape long-term margins
  • Indian regulation can reshape an industry quickly
